How Your Qareen Can Influence Your Istikhara and Signs
Istikhara is a beautiful and powerful form of du’ā that allows us to seek Allah’s guidance when making important decisions. It is meant to bring clarity and direction, helping us move toward what is best for us in this life and the next. However, many people don’t realise that their Qareen—the constant, unseen companion from the jinn assigned to every person—can interfere with this process, leading to confusion, deception, and even misinterpretation of signs.
What is the Qareen?
The Qareen is a jinn that is assigned to every human being at birth. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is none among you but a companion from among the jinn has been assigned to him.”
They (the Companions) said: “Even you, O Messenger of Allah?”
He said: “Even me, but Allah helped me against him, so he has submitted and does not tell me to do anything but good.”
— (Muslim 2814)
For most people, however, their Qareen does not submit to Allah and instead works to lead them astray. It whispers doubts, fuels negative emotions, encourages sin, and even manipulates perceptions—especially when someone is trying to seek clarity from Allah.
How Your Qareen Can Influence Your Istikhara
1. Interfering with Your Thoughts and Emotions
After praying Istikhara, many people wait for a “feeling” to determine whether something is good or bad for them. However, the Qareen can manipulate emotions, making something harmful seem appealing or making a good choice feel unsettling. This is why relying solely on emotions after Istikhara can be misleading.
2. Creating False Signs
People often look for signs in their daily lives after praying Istikhara. The Qareen can influence the way we perceive things, making us notice certain “signs” that may not actually be from Allah but are instead planted to mislead us. This can cause someone to rush into a bad decision or reject a good one based on misinterpretation.
3. Affecting Dreams
One of the biggest misconceptions about Istikhara is that the answer will always come through a dream. While Allah may choose to guide someone through a dream, it is not a requirement. The problem is that the Qareen can also influence dreams, creating scenarios that seem convincing but are actually misleading. A person might see a dream that makes them feel confident in a harmful choice or fearful of a good one.
4. Whispering Doubts About the Answer
Even after receiving clarity through Istikhara, the Qareen can plant doubts, making a person overthink their decision. They might second-guess the ease or obstacles they encounter, leading them to ignore the actual guidance Allah has provided.
How to Protect Yourself When Praying Istikhara
Since the Qareen and Shaytaan work to mislead us, it is important to seek Allah’s protection when making decisions. Here’s how you can safeguard yourself:
• Pray for Protection from Shaytaan Before and After Istikhara
When making Istikhara, also ask Allah to protect you from deception, misinterpretation, and interference from the Qareen. Say:
“O Allah, protect me from the whispers of Shaytaan and any confusion from my Qareen. Let my heart be guided only by You.”
• Sleep with Wudhu and Recite Protective Surahs
Before sleeping, perform wudhu and recite:
• Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)
• Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas (for protection from evil whispers and illusions)
• Surah Al-Ikhlas (to strengthen your connection with Allah)
• Rely on Ease and Obstacles, Not Just Feelings or Dreams
The real answer to Istikhara unfolds through ease or obstacles in the path ahead. If something is good for you, Allah will make it easier; if it is harmful, He will place barriers. Do not rely solely on emotions or dreams—pay attention to how things naturally unfold after your Istikhara.
• Consult Righteous People for Perspective
If you are confused, speak to someone with knowledge and wisdom who is free from emotional attachment to your decision. They may help you see things more clearly, without the emotional influence that the Qareen can manipulate.
Istikhara is a way to connect with Allah and seek His guidance, but we must be aware of the potential influence of the Qareen. Protecting yourself through du’ā, wudhu, and Qur’ānic recitations will help you receive true guidance without deception. Trust Allah’s signs and the way He directs your path, rather than relying only on emotions or dreams. When you seek Allah sincerely and protect yourself from distractions, He will never misguide you.
